The need for Smart PDUs.

Power Distribution Units (PDUs) maybe the last link in the power chain, but that does not make them any less important. As a matter of fact it may just make them the most important link in the chain.
As computer/data center environments become more critical the need for control and reliability increases. Selecting the right PDU can provide you with the insight necessary to avoid costly shut downs of IT equipment.
The driving factors for any piece of equipment going into the Data Center must address the IT challenges of today. The top five would be infrastructure management, heat density, availability, energy efficiency and power density. On top of dealing with these issues it must also be able to support advanced monitoring and control.
This is where the MPH2 series from Emerson Power shines. Not only is the MPH2 is the most intelligent, high-availability line of managed rack PDUs. It offers remote monitoring and control capabilities as well as environmental input options, with multiple power input selections and output configurations.
MPH2 Benefits
  • Monitors electrical and environmental parameters with set threshold and alarm tools
  • Controls and manages individual receptacles and/or groups of loads and devices
  • Allows you to predict failing conditions before they occur and proactively manage connected equipment for maximum uptime
  • Energy and power metering to maximize the data center power and cooling infrastructure
  • Lowest power consumption of all switched rack PDU designs ensures lower operating costs for datacenter
  • Up to four MPH2 rack PDUs may be interconnected as a Rack PDU Array™, consolidating user IP connections and device monitoring.

Designed for Critical Environments
  • Industry leading operating temperature —up to 60˚C / 140˚F to support hot Internal
  • rack environments
  • Bi-stable relays ensure basic power distribution in the event that intelligence is compromised
  • Accurate power metering of +/-1% voltage & current for assured oversight
  • Energy and power metering down to the individual receptacle
  • Comprehensive alarming including notification of overloaded branch circuits
  • Environmental sensing with threshold and alarm set-points
  • Notification on the loss or removal of individual rack equipment loads

The Debate about Modular Data Centers.

To build or not to build, that is the question.
Data Centers today are being deployed far and wide trying to catch up with the needs of the business world and the increasing reliance on mobile and cloud computing. The internet of everything and connectivity in the palm of your hand is changing the landscape of the network environment almost like shifting sands in the desert.
And leading the charge in the boardrooms are two things, OPEX and CAPEX, when to spend money and where. Two of the biggest reasons typically listed as the problem within data centers are capital and speed of deployment. The traditional brick and mortar data center takes a lot of money and time to build. If you are not even considering modular components for expansion and new builds, you run the risk of putting yourself at significant disadvantage in today’s globally competitive market.
Let’s reflect here for a minute, what is one of the biggest changes in the Data Center? Would you agree that both Blade server technology and virtualization have had an enormous impact on Data Center in the last 5 or so years? I do. I talk to clients everyday and hear issues about over cooling, skids of servers slated to be destroyed and even reclaiming of floor space. Now don’t you think companies dealing with these issues wish that they had used a modular, scalable solution to avoid the excess costs they are now dealing with?
Who knows what will happen in the next 5 to 10 years the way technology is going? All I know is that agility, flexibility, scalability, sustainability and most of all affordability will always be hot top issue when it comes to the Data Centers and their operation.
Here are the top 5 reasons I believe will drive Modular Data Center Adoption:
  1. Reduction of power consumption when compared to conventional Data Center Design by up to 28%.

  1. Reduction of time and cost of deployment within months.

  1. Sustainable model which ensures continuity of business processes.

  1. Increased physical security due to the light out remote access model.

  1. Benefits in efficiency due to the self-contained nature of the ecosystem.

Why Data Center's need Converged Infrastructure Intelligence.

Today’s data center is a complex environment that presents challenges on several levels. With IT staff reductions and the requirement for greater productivity; while maintaining service levels, the need for products that converge infrastructure intelligence is growing. Multi-vendor and multi-location environments only add another layer of complexity to the mix. Maintaining enhanced security, increasing accessibility and providing high availability become primary concerns.
Monitoring, performance management and real-time reporting are critical to the day to day functioning of the data center and needs to be accessible from any place at any time. Not only is access important, but being able to achieve this support through a single tool, while providing granularity and streamlined management is essential.
These three products from Avocent address these issues and provide remote and cross platform management of mutli-vendor data center environments and also feature remote location secured access and provide high availability leveraging in/out of band management. Coupled with the DSView software these products bring new meaning to Converged Infrastructure Intelligence.
  • Secure Console and power management
  • Server and network management
  • Secure access to test and develop lab environments
  • Telco CO and remote facilities support

  • Consolidated management of KVM, Serial Console, PDUs, Server Processor and environmental sensors
  • Local and remote out/in band management
  • Enhanced Security
  • Multi-Tenant Design
  • Remote access to KVM, USB & Serial Connections
  • Virtual media enables remote USB connections and support for smartcard/CAC readers
  • FIPS 140-2 compliant cryptography
  • Built-in Web interface for standalone applications or can be managed with the Avocent DSView™ 4 management software*

A Data Center Fairy Tale

Cost, cost, cost has become the new location, location, location of the Data Center world. Issues from cooling, to power, to shrinking footprints, and increasing densities, along with cloud solutions, and outsourcing are hot potato topics currently bouncing around boardrooms.
And although Efficiency, Capacity, Availability, and Control are major considerations, cost and how to minimize it, is still King. Almost every client I speak with tells me the same thing, and that is, nothing, I mean nothing, is implemented without ensuring that ROI will eclipse the initial cost of a project. There is apparently simply no room in the budget. And as we all know it is hard to convince those in accounting the benefits of an upgraded or properly designed Data Center.
But don't lose hope yet. Let us imagine together of a system that is fully integrated with a simple design that can maintain efficiency while giving us the flexibility to grow and could be implemented quickly & easily. Perhaps that is too good to be true, perhaps it is a silly dream or maybe a fairy tale right?
What would you say if I told you, you can have it all? I would be your knight in shining armour, right?
Well with SmartRow, what you need, is what you get.
Introducing The SmartRow™ Solution:
The SmartRow solution is an intelligent integrated infrastructure that can be implemented in just weeks. It allows you to easily deploy and effectively manage an integrated IT infrastructure without being limited by building systems, such as fire suppression and cooling.
