The Debate about Modular Data Centers.

To build or not to build, that is the question.
Data Centers today are being deployed far and wide trying to catch up with the needs of the business world and the increasing reliance on mobile and cloud computing. The internet of everything and connectivity in the palm of your hand is changing the landscape of the network environment almost like shifting sands in the desert.
And leading the charge in the boardrooms are two things, OPEX and CAPEX, when to spend money and where. Two of the biggest reasons typically listed as the problem within data centers are capital and speed of deployment. The traditional brick and mortar data center takes a lot of money and time to build. If you are not even considering modular components for expansion and new builds, you run the risk of putting yourself at significant disadvantage in today’s globally competitive market.
Let’s reflect here for a minute, what is one of the biggest changes in the Data Center? Would you agree that both Blade server technology and virtualization have had an enormous impact on Data Center in the last 5 or so years? I do. I talk to clients everyday and hear issues about over cooling, skids of servers slated to be destroyed and even reclaiming of floor space. Now don’t you think companies dealing with these issues wish that they had used a modular, scalable solution to avoid the excess costs they are now dealing with?
Who knows what will happen in the next 5 to 10 years the way technology is going? All I know is that agility, flexibility, scalability, sustainability and most of all affordability will always be hot top issue when it comes to the Data Centers and their operation.
Here are the top 5 reasons I believe will drive Modular Data Center Adoption:
  1. Reduction of power consumption when compared to conventional Data Center Design by up to 28%.

  1. Reduction of time and cost of deployment within months.

  1. Sustainable model which ensures continuity of business processes.

  1. Increased physical security due to the light out remote access model.

  1. Benefits in efficiency due to the self-contained nature of the ecosystem.

A Data Center Fairy Tale

Cost, cost, cost has become the new location, location, location of the Data Center world. Issues from cooling, to power, to shrinking footprints, and increasing densities, along with cloud solutions, and outsourcing are hot potato topics currently bouncing around boardrooms.
And although Efficiency, Capacity, Availability, and Control are major considerations, cost and how to minimize it, is still King. Almost every client I speak with tells me the same thing, and that is, nothing, I mean nothing, is implemented without ensuring that ROI will eclipse the initial cost of a project. There is apparently simply no room in the budget. And as we all know it is hard to convince those in accounting the benefits of an upgraded or properly designed Data Center.
But don't lose hope yet. Let us imagine together of a system that is fully integrated with a simple design that can maintain efficiency while giving us the flexibility to grow and could be implemented quickly & easily. Perhaps that is too good to be true, perhaps it is a silly dream or maybe a fairy tale right?
What would you say if I told you, you can have it all? I would be your knight in shining armour, right?
Well with SmartRow, what you need, is what you get.
Introducing The SmartRow™ Solution:
The SmartRow solution is an intelligent integrated infrastructure that can be implemented in just weeks. It allows you to easily deploy and effectively manage an integrated IT infrastructure without being limited by building systems, such as fire suppression and cooling.
It is available in three- to six-rack configurations for up to 20kW of total capacity, allowing you the flexibility to start small and expand over time.
This space-saving and cost-effective solution combines the industry’s finest
power, precision cooling and infrastructure management technologies in a sealed environment – meaning you can place it in virtually any conditioned space.
Each SmartRow offering integrates industry best practices in data center design and operations including:
  • Hot air and cold air separation
  • Cold air containment
  • High-efficiency dedicated cooling
  • Space-savings, small-footprint
  • Modularity for flexibility and easier expansion
  • Integrated monitoring and control to optimize
  • efficiency in planning and management
  • Unique local service for design audits, configuration
  • support, installation support, maintenance and repair
  • High availability and high efficiency UPS
  • Integrated fire suppression
So as you see some fairy tales do have happy endings. To find out more about how you too can have a happy ending, make an appointment today.

Can a Computer Room be Plug & Play?

The problem with most of the smaller networking environments is that they were never intended to house or support networking products. Closets, entrance facilities, warehouses and other re-purposed spaces seldom have the necessary infrastructure to support these systems. The challenge then becomes how can we deploy our systems in these type of spaces quickly and efficiently while keeping cost to a minimum?
Deploying a computer room has never been so easy with Liebert's Mini Computer Room Enclosure (MCR).
The Liebert MCR is a self-contained rack enclosure system that includes a load-sized, computer-grade air conditioner located at the bottom of the enclosure, with the option of a top mount design, supplying cool air to sensitive equipment on all levels. A back-up cooling system ensures environmental security. Power can be supplied and protected through an optional Liebert GXT on-line UPS or Liebert PSI line-interactive UPS.
Main Features:
Flexibility:
  • Designed as a plug-and-play system ready to install.
  • Wheel-mounted cabinet for easy relocation.
  • Adjustable racks and rack rails support a wide variety of equipment.
  • Optional top mounted air conditioning allows maximum use of internal rack space or can be used to double cooling capacity with the internal air conditioning unit.
Higher Availability:
  • Cools IT equipment to eliminate downtime from overheating.
  • Lockable door protects against unauthorized access.
  • Specially designed door gasket and sealed cable entrance ensure stable cooling environment and reduce noise.
  • Back-up cooling assures continued cooling in the event of a power loss.
  • Improved cable access and management improves airflow to reduce overheating of protected IT equipment.
Lowest Total Cost Of Ownership:
  • No need to build a computer room.
  • Competitively priced as an integrated system, compared to purchasing separate components.
  • Simplified plug-and-play installation reduces overall implementation time, reducing costs.
  • Optional energy saver control saves money by allowing back-up cooling to operate as primary enclosure cooler.
  • Integrated air conditioning reduces potential downtime costs by assuring proper system operation.
